"Pride and Prejudice" is a romantic novel of manners by "Jane Austen" in which Austen shows her two major characters of the novel, one as pride and another as prejudice. Austen wrote it between 1796 to 1797 in Georgian Period, when King George 3rd was ruling over England. It was first published in 1813. This type of novel focuses on the social behavior and customs of upper class people.
About Author
Jane Austen was the best admired English fiction writer of the nineteenth century. Her life was unexciting but her novels give delightful reading to its readers. She was born in 1775 and died in 1817. Jane Austen was famous for her novels about the domestic life of upper class English people.
After the publication of her six major works she became famous. Her first novel is "Pride and Prejudice" (1813) and other works are "Sense and Sensibility"( 1811), "Mansfield Park" (1814), "Emma" ( 1815). Besides these novels Jane Austen wrote two additional novels, "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion", both published posthumously in 1818 and began her third novel which eventually titled "Sanditon" but died before completing it. She wrote a short Epistolary novel also, "Lady Susan" between 1793 and 1795.
Plot Summary
The novel is set in the rural England of 19th Century. When there are five sisters in a Bennet family with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. The eldest sister is Jane Bennet who is much beautiful and attractive, second sister is Elizabeth who plays an important role than other sisters in the novel, Marry, Kitty and Lydia are other younger sisters afterward. Mrs. Bennet has only one dream that's to see her all daughters marrying in a wealthy family.
One day, a good looking wealthy bachelor, Charles Bingley, arrives in the neighborhood of Bennet family with his two sisters. Mrs. Bennet wishes to marry any one of her daughters with Mr. Bingley as he is wealthy and smart. In a social gathering, Bennet and Bingley family find a chance to know each other. Charles Bingley's good behavior makes him favorite of Bennet family. Charles Bingley begins to get attracted with Jane Bennet and dances with her twice. He tells his friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, who is much wealthy than Charles to dance with Jane's younger sister Elizabeth but he declines by saying that she is not so attractive, after hearing this Elizabeth begins to hate him as Darcy is very arrogant.
One day, Mr. Bingley's sisters invite Jane on dinner but because of getting caught in rain, she suffers from cold and stays there on forcing. When Elizabeth comes to meet her sister, Mr. Darcy finds himself getting attracted with her which Mr. Bingley's sister dislikes as she loves Darcy and doesn't look Elizabeth as a perfect match for him.
Mr. Collins, Mr. Bennet's cousin and Bennet's future hair, comes to meet Bennet family because, he wants to marry one of the Bennet sisters as Jane has already engaged so he proposes Elizabeth but she refuses this proposal at her father's please. After this rejection, Mr. Collins marries with Elizabeth's friend Charlotte Lucas.
Now, Elizabeth meets a dashing army officer, George Wickham, who tells Elizabeth about Darcy that he knows him and claims Mr. Darcy of depriving him from a living which was promised by Darcy's late father. Elizabeth's hate grows for Darcy and likes George Wickham as a good person.
At an another social gathering in Netherfield, Darcy meets Elizabeth and asks her to dance. He thinks to propose her but because of his pride of money and social status, he doesn't do it. Here, Darcy is shown as Pride and Elizabeth is shown as Prejudice as she has prejudice for Darcy in her mind because of his arrogant behavior. Shortly afterward, Bingley family returns to London and Mr. Bingley's sister tells Jane that now her brother will not marry her instead he will marry Mr. Darcy's sister.
In the spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte, her friend and Mr. Collins in Kent. Where in Rosings Park, she meets Mr. Darcy and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Colonel Fitzwilliam tells Elizabeth that how Darcy saved his friend, perhaps, Mr. Bingley from an undesirable match. Elizabeth realizes that Darsy is the reason of her sister's marriage dismissal. Now, Darcy is confirm that Elizabeth is a right choice for him as she is an understanding and good looking girl. When he goes to propose her, she immediately, refuses by saying that she can't marry a person who is the reason of her sister's unhappiness and claims that he did wrong with George Wickham also. Later, Darcy writes a latter to Elizabeth by explaining that he had no intention to dismiss her sister's marriage and writes about George Wickham that he tried to flee his fifteen years old sister so he deprived him from living. After this explanation, Elizabeth somewhat changes her opinion for Darcy.
Some months later, Elizabeth goes on a tour of Derbyshire with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner. Where at Pemberley, they meet Mr. Darsy again. Mr. Darcy invites them to meet his sister. Elizabeth becomes delight from their treatment. This time, she also behaves good with Darcy. After receiving news about her youngest sister, Lydia that she has run off with Wickham, immediately, Elizabeth tells Darsy about it and departs from there.
After some time, Lydia and Wickham come home but now, Wickham is not ready to marry Lydia and he demands for money to marry Lydia. Mr. Darcy pays money to Wickham, secretly, to get him ready for marriage. Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth's father, thinks that Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner would have paid Wickham but later, Mrs. Gardiner tells that Mr. Darcy paid and convinced him for marriage. After hearing this, how Mr. Darcy paid Wickham and saved her family's reputation, Elizabeth's opinion about Mr. Darcy completely changes and she begins to love him.
After getting about Darcy, Mr. Bingley returns to Netherfield and again proposes Jane Bennet and she accepts. Mr. Darcy proposes Elizabeth and this time, without any difficulty she accepts. Elizabeth convinces her father that she is marrying for love, not for money and position. Mrs. Bennet is also happy to see her daughter's match with Darcy. At the End, the novel concludes with the marriage of three daughters and their parents' great satisfaction to see their daughters' good matches.
